Degendering Leadership in Higher Education by
Binary gendered leadership definitions are threatening to leaders whose styles do not match these narrow understandings, and do not leave room for trans, non-binary, and intersex leaders who do not fit within this binary that does not predict leadership styles. Through 34 interviews with women and men serving as presidents, deans, and provosts at some of the United States' top colleges and universities, this book explores what degendered leadership looks like in an academic setting. Higher educational settings have seen more women in leadership roles than in corporate and governmental settings, making this a prime setting for the study of the intersection of gender and leadership. Through interview analysis, the author addresses the following questions: What role does gender play in the narratives of women and men leaders? How might leaders' gendering of leadership reproduce gender stereotypes? Similarly, high schools with strong science curricula reduce the power of gender stereotypes concerning science and technology and encourage girls to major in scientific fields. Building Gender Equity in the Academy : Institutional Strategies for Change by
An evidence-based, action-oriented response to the persistent, everyday inequity of academic workplaces. Despite decades of effort by federal science funders to increase the numbers of women holding advanced degrees and faculty jobs in science and engineering, they are persistently underrepresented in academic STEM disciplines, especially in positions of seniority, leadership, and prestige. Women filled 47% of all US jobs in 2015, but held only 24% of STEM jobs. Barriers to women are built into academic workplaces: biased selection and promotion systems, inadequate structures to support those with family and personal responsibilities, and old-boy networks that can exclude even very successful women from advancing into top leadership roles. But this situation can--and must--change. In Building Gender Equity in the Academy, Sandra Laursen and Ann E. Austin offer a concrete, data-driven approach to creating institutions that foster gender equity. Solitudes of the Workplace focuses on experiences of marginalization, uncertainty and segregation created by the hierarchical structures of categories in universities and by gendered identities. Studying a wider range of women's roles in universities than prior research, the experiences of support staff, senior administrators, researchers, non-academic administrators, and contract teachers are added to those of faculty and students. The essays show how attempts to introduce new knowledge are manoeuvered and the resistance this process can encounter, as well as the ways in which institutional policies can blur and change identities. Addressing longstanding issues such as the entanglement of gender and the assessment of merit, attention is also given to how new identities are claimed and successfully projected. Essays presenting workers' points of view reveal the confusion that occurs when official policy and everyday knowledge conflict, when processes like tenure and other status changes create troublesome realities, and when it becomes routine to experience status denigration.
