Collection Development

 

Polk State College librarians select and recommend materials for purchase and addition to the libraries’ physical and electronic collections is guided by an internal collection development policy reflective of the college’s goal of strengthening and maintaining academic excellence.  Standard selection tools such as book review publications and reviews from professional and academic journals and other periodicals are utilized by librarians to select materials for acquisition.

 

REVIEW MEDIA SUBSCRIPTIONS USED FOR LIBRARY COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT:

  • CHOICE Reviews (monthly compendium of reviews of academic titles)
  • Library Journal
  • Booklist
  • Publishers’ Weekly
  • New York Times Book Review
  • New York Review of Books.
  • Baker & Taylor Academic Online (ordering tool)
  • Book Review Digest Plus (e-resource)

 

Other selection resources such as publishers’ catalogs, published lists of recommended materials for college libraries or lists for specific disciplines, other college libraries, interlibrary loan request records, and trials to electronic resources are also utilized to inform selection of resources.   Additionally, faculty, staff and students are able and encouraged to recommend materials for inclusion in the libraries’ collections.
