Finding Primary Sources in the Humanities and Social Sciences

What is a primary source in the humanities?

  • Unmediated: It is direct information. It is not someone analyzing or critiquing someone else's work.
  • Direct Experience: These can be copies of journals, artwork, photos, phone calls, newspaper articles created during that time period or recollections from people who were there.
  • First-person: Another way to think of primary sources is that they are first-person accounts. Someone is documenting an experience. These can include official documents (e.g. memos, letters, meeting minutes, observation notes, sketches).

Examples of primary source material:

These examples are provided by the Digital Collection of the Library of Congress and are available for anyone to explore.
