ENC 0027 - Developmental Reading and Writing II: Using the Library Catalog

Ask A LIbrarian

Thinking Critically in College

Using the Polk State College Library Catalog

To locate books in the Polk State Library, I need to use the library's catalog.  I will start by going to the Polk State College website, clicking on Library/TLCC, and then clicking on Books/Catalog.

Next, I will enter my search terms and click the magnifying glass to search. For this example, I will search climate change

The top results are the most relevant items. I can use the "Tweak your results" on the left side of the page to refine my search results.

For example, let's say I am looking for books on the shelf at the Lakeland campus. Here are the limits I would check under these categories:

Availability: Available on shelf

Library: Polk/Lakeland

Resource Type: Books

Then I would click Apply Filters

Next, I will look over the results. Once I see a book I like I can click on the title to get the call number and the citation information. Here is one! Title: Air Pollution and Climate Change: The Basics

After clicking on the title, I can get the citation information. I can also write down the call number to find the book on the shelf. If I have trouble finding the book, I can ask library staff for help.

If after searching I still cannot find what I need, I can use Ask a Librarian, email, or stop by the library.
